How to Get the Most Out of Car Wash Trade Shows

Expert tips from the Howco team
Car wash trade shows are among the best opportunities in the industry to learn, network, and position yourself for success, whether you're a new investor exploring the business, a seasoned operator tracking trends, or a vendor showcasing your latest products. But walking in unprepared means walking out with missed opportunities.
Our team attends every major show in the industry. Here's what we've learned.
Before You Arrive
Do your homework. Talk to experienced operators, identify the vendors and people you most want to connect with, and find out where their booths are. Make appointments where possible — a little preparation saves enormous time on the floor.
Prepare your pitch. You'll have dozens of face-to-face interactions with vendors and operators. Have a concise, rehearsed elevator pitch ready: who you are, what you're building, and what you're looking for. Many of the people you meet could become lifelong professional contacts.
Pack smart. Bring more business cards than you think you'll need. Add a backpack for materials you collect, plus water, snacks, and comfortable shoes. Show floors often span several acres of concrete, with hours of walking and standing.
On the Show Floor
Work a prioritized plan. Connect with your highest-priority vendors first, then explore from there. There are plenty of distractions and vendors competing for your attention, so having a daily plan — and adjusting it deliberately — keeps you on track.
Lean on your distributor. If you're working with a distributor like Howco, put them to work. Our team staffs vendor booths directly rather than running our own, which means we can personally escort customers to every relevant vendor. For first-time attendees especially, having an experienced guide is invaluable.
Take notes and ask questions. Write down questions before approaching each vendor and use the list. If it's useful, record key conversations using your phone's voice memo app (just let the vendor know first).
Time your visits strategically. Visiting booths toward the end of the day often means shorter lines and more focused conversations.
Dress professionally. You're representing your business. Business casual is appropriate for the floor; check whether after-hours events call for something different.
Beyond the Booth
Never eat alone. Use every meal as a networking opportunity. Schedule breakfasts or lunches with targeted contacts or knowledgeable peers.
Attend seminars and roundtables. Professional development sessions and operator roundtables are typically held before the show floor opens. They're consistently informative and offer some of the best networking opportunities of the entire event.
Take the local car wash tour. Many shows offer behind-the-scenes tours of washes in the host city. These are worth your time, both for operational insights and for the informal networking they generate.
Unplug from home. Have someone cover your operation so you're not fielding calls about minor issues. Your full attention on the show pays dividends.
A Final Word
Car washing is a “big little” industry, one where long-term relationships and shared knowledge are genuine competitive advantages. Trade shows are where those relationships are built.
Let your Howco representative know which shows you're attending. We'll help you plan your approach, make the right introductions, and keep you moving efficiently — including steering you clear of vendors who aren't on your list.
Enjoy the shows!
